Student Reflection on the U.S. Elections COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog We have received some concerned questions from prospective students about last week’s U.S. election results and what a Trump presidency means for students applying to SIPA. As a school of public and international affairs, SIPA has always been a place where students of different backgrounds can come together to peacefully and respectfully discuss their political views and challenge each other to expand their worldviews. We want to reassure everyone that SIPA will continue to encourage students to be open with each other and to advocate for what they believe in while respecting all members of our community. As a current student, it is clear to me that SIPA strives to be a supportive community for all of its students. In the days  since the election there have been several  discussions and forums set up for students to express their reactions to the election results, and a tremendous out pour of support from SIPA faculty and peers. Professors have been available to share their views and reflect on what the election means for the SIPA community, and students have gathered together to strategize for the coming years. The election results may have come as a shock to many, but that hasn’t gotten SIPA students down. This gives us the opportunity to use what we have learned here at SIPA and to unite together. I came to SIPA to advance my career in human rights advocacy, and this election cycle has only strengthened my resolve to achieve that goal. Whether you are upset or happy with the results of the election, and in the wake of political events the world over, it is time for everyone to take a long hard look at what the political system has become and how we can make it better. SIPA is the place for you to do that. The coursework, along with the opportunities to interact with experts in their respective fields and peers from around the world, will give you the knowledge and tools to overcome the challenges our world faces today. It is our responsibility to challenge what we see as unjust and to advocate on the behalf of others that are unable to do so themselves. We’re running through the inky black darkness for what seems like an eternity, we are running out of energy- I’m panting. We slow, eventually stopping, our eyes darting around looking for an exit, nothing. Then we hear the thudding footsteps growing louder so that it sounds echo all around- we are trying to find its origin but we can’t. My friend panics and breaks out in a run yelling for us to follow. One by one we follow running deeper in to the seemingly endless darkness. She has the desire to change but is in need of the will to change. I would focus on her everyday routine, eliminating the parts of her day that involve thoughts or ideas that lead to using heroin and cocaine. I would recommend that she use the 12 step program and group therapy as new ways to guide her towards recovery. Since she using these substances in private, I feel she could possibly benefit from others who know and feel the same struggles as she does. This would allow her to not feel alone in her recovery and bring a sense of accountability to prevent from relapse. I would monitor her progress in the 12 step program and encourage her to patiently complete each step. I’m basing my treatment strategy on trust. In order to eliminate her fear and anxiety along with her addiction through these screens and methods, she must be willing to trust herself at all times. Everyone was interested in Helen, who wouldnt be?During their long time of fame, Helen and Annie met a lot of neat,interesting people including a very nice young man named John Macy. He workedfor a magazine and was one of the greatest supporters Helen and Annie ever had. When Helen grew up, John decided that he would ask Annie to marry him. Annie atfirst wasnt sure because he was eleven years younger than her. She finallysaid yes and they were married on May 2, 1905. Annie was now thirty-nine andJohn was twenty-eight. The marriage only lasted eight years before John decided to sail toEurope. It wasnt a divorce, but more of a separation. Annie knew that shecould count on him if she needed anything, so it wasnt like they hated eachother, it just didnt work out. Annie and Helen spent the rest of their lives together touring theUnited States and parts of Canada, talking to people and doing presentations. Annie off and on during these years, got sick. Sometimes really bad andsometimes just little colds. On October 19, 1936, it was different. A coupleof days before, Annie had seemed happy and was laughing and smiling just likeher old self. On that night though, she slipped into a coma and never woke upagain. She had quietly past away, but lived a good, long life of seventy years. Helen was fifty-six. I really enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend it toanyone who likes an interesting true story. The book taught me a lot about theblind and deaf and how they cope with their unfortunate handicap. It taught methat even though you might have a handicap nothing is impossible. As long asyou put your mind to it you can do anything. Anyone who likes an inspirationalnovel would love this book. Category: Science
